Gender equality is not about women, and it is not about men - it is about making workplaces work for everyone.- Writer & Producer, Michelle King.
In 2024, gender equality remains a key focus worldwide. In different industries, women are still underrepresented in leadership roles and often face discriminatory practices that hinder their career growth. Governments and organisations are urged to ensure there are more measures in place for qualified women to have equal opportunity to lead and drive positive changes in their workplace.
Closer to home, according to the recent World Economic Forum's (WEF) Gender Gap Index published in June, Malaysia ranked 102nd out of 146 countries, in terms of gender equality in economic participation and opportunity. While the country exceeds the global average in labour-force participation rate, wage equality for similar work, and estimated earned income, it still lacks representation of women among legislators, senior officials, managers, and professional and technical workers.

Gender equality in the workplace means providing equal opportunities and treatment for all employees, regardless of gender. This includes aspects such as employment practices, pay impartiality, career advancement opportunities, and a respectful and inclusive work environment.
Promoting gender equality is not only a moral necessity but also a strategic advantage, as it leads to:

A gender-balanced team brings a variety of viewpoints and ideas, which can enhance creativity and problem-solving.

Studies conducted by Global Management Consulting firm McKinsey & Company have shown that companies with board-gender diversity in the top quartile are 27 percent more likely to achieve better financial performance compared to those in the bottom quartile.

Organisations that are known for their commitment to gender equality attract top talent and retain employees longer, in turn reducing turnover costs.

Companies that promote gender equality are viewed positively by customers, investors, and the public. This can enhance their brand and reputation.

Team building consist of activities that build a united team. It involves activities and exercises designed to improve interpersonal relationships, improve teamwork and align goals. On its own, effective team building can lead to numerous benefits including:

Team building activities encourage open dialogue among team members, breaking down barriers and promoting a culture of transparency.

By working together in various exercises, team members learn to leverage each other’s strengths and compensate for weaknesses, leading to better collaboration on work projects.

Fun and engaging team building activities can boost morale, making employees feel valued and motivated to contribute their best efforts.

Team building helps individuals understand and appreciate diverse perspectives, which can be crucial in resolving conflicts and building a harmonious work environment.

Team building activities encourage camaraderie and mutual respect among team members. When individuals collaborate towards a shared objective, they are more likely to view each other as equals and recognise the unique skills and perspectives each person brings. This is particularly impactful for promoting gender equality, as it helps break down barriers and build relationships based on mutual respect and appreciation.
One effective approach to promoting gender equality through team building is cross-gender mentoring. This involves pairing team members of different genders to work on a specific project or task together. Such mentoring allows team members to learn from one another and appreciate the different perspectives each gender offers. By collaborating this way, team members build trust and respect, gaining a deeper understanding of the challenges each gender faces in the workplace.
Another powerful team building activity is providing training on unconscious bias. Unconscious biases are the attitudes and stereotypes we hold about others based on characteristics such as gender or race. These biases, though often subtle, can significantly impact our behaviour and decision-making. Through unconscious bias training, team members can become aware of their biases and learn strategies to lessen their effects in workplace interactions.
Team building activities also promote a culture of inclusivity and respect. Encouraging team members to share their experiences and listen to others promotes a supportive environment. Creating a safe space where employees feel comfortable voicing concerns related to gender equality and other diversity issues is crucial for supporting inclusivity.
By implementing these team building strategies, workplaces can make significant strides towards achieving gender equality and creating a more inclusive and respectful work environment.
Promoting gender equality through team building is not just a sign of progress, but a strategic necessity. By encouraging an inclusive culture where every team member feels valued and respected, organisations can realise the full potential of their workforce. Team building and gender equality, when integrated effectively, can lead to a more harmonious, innovative, and successful organisation. Organisations committed to these principles gain a competitive edge, as team building and gender equality are key drivers of sustainable growth and success.
