Once upon a time of 40,000 years ago, Niah Great Cave provided shelter for early humans. Here lies the oldest human known site in Southeast Asia. Today, the cave is home only to bats, swiftlets and other specially adapted forms of life. The famous Painted cave is another highlight of the visit to Niah. The Great Cave and Painted Cave are declared as National Historical Monuments. They were also claimed as national parks in 1974.
